During this time, I can access the Linux machine by its static IP, so I know the network is actually working. Sometimes it will disconnect immediately, other times it will stay connected for a little while before dropping the connection and choosing a different preferred network. I can see all this happening in the logs on the Linux system. On the Mac, it joins the network, requests and gets an IP and does some DNS requests, but then shows a dialog stating that the network could not be joined. So that all seems to work OK, but I get some odd behavior when connecting to it with my Mac. My Windows system will connect to it, get an IP address, and show "Local access only". Its running hostapd, busybox udhcpd and busybox dnsd. So it won't be bridged to the Internet, and will thus have no Internet connection. I'm working on setting up a small Linux system which will broadcast a Wifi network to use for local administration.
